Siblings Group Support Worker

Unique Kidz and co is a charity based in Morecambe founded in 2009 by two mums who were unable to find suitable childcare for their disabled children. We are seeking a Siblings Group Support Worker to work at our new siblings group funded by BBC Children in Need. The group works with siblings of disabled children aged 8 and above. Experience of working with children and young people , good communication skills and an ability to work as part of a team are all essential .

Job Description

Title: Siblings Group Support Worker

Responsible to: Siblings Group Leader

Location: Unique Kidz and Co Woodhill Lane Morecambe

Hours: Part-time – 10 hours per month worked 2nd Thursday evening of every month and one Saturday per month (Thursdays 6.00pm till 8.45pm Saturdays 11.30am till 3.30 pm)

Contract:Casual

Pay: £8.24 per hour

Purpose:

To assist in the promotion, development and delivery of our new sibling support groups for young people aged 8 and above who have a brother or sister with a disability; giving siblings the opportunity to enjoy themselves, relax and relieve isolation. The Siblings groups aim to increase knowledge of their siblings disability, model coping strategies and share their feelings and emotions in a setting where they will be understood, respected and supported. We want to provide a fun place to make friends and enjoy trips out and opportunities to increase confidence, self-esteem.

Role – Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • To liaise with the Siblings support group leader and group members regarding session planning; prepare for sessions by buying or collecting materials as needed; offer a range of ideas and suggestions to planning sessions
  • Help to create a warm, welcoming and friendly environment in the groups
  • Deliver and review specific activities which encourage siblings to discuss, explore and understand their feelings about having a brother or sister with a disability
  • Fully participate in Siblings Group sessions, including leading activities. Assist with the development, monitoring and evaluation of the service.
  • Adhere to all Unique Kidz and Co policies and procedures
  • Ensure safeguarding procedures are followed at all times, responsible for reporting any concerns to Activities Coordinator without delay
  • Maintain a healthy, safe and secure working environment
  • Undertake relevant training and continuous personal development and participate in supervision with your line manager
  • Provide support to volunteers who are working with the Siblings groups

Knowledge / qualifications

A relevant qualification e.g. Youth Worker, Play therapy, counselling – Desirable

An understanding of how groups work – Essential

Knowledge of child protection/safeguarding children procedures – Essential

Knowledge of siblings’ needs – Essential

Knowledge of child development – Desirable

Experience

Working in a team – Essential

Group work with young people- Essential

Experience of leading fun, stimulating, supportive and/or educational activities for children and young people – Essential

Skills

Can communicate with parents/carers, children and professionals – Essential

Can provide a child-centred environment and sensitivity to the needs of individual children. – Essential

Can devise and lead games, activities, arts and crafts that are age-appropriate and meet the objectives of the service – Essential

Able to work with people in an anti-discriminatory manner- Essential

To maintain confidentiality for all service users- Essential

Full clean driving licence /Midas D1- Desirable
